So you think that Java has to much boilerplate code. It is not agile enough. But there are all these awesome libraries you love to use. Your solution has arrived and Gerald Bauer from the Vancouver Groovy User Group will tell you all about it presenting the Groovy language and the Grails web application development framework.

- Presentation:
Groovy and Grails presented by Gerald BauerThe presentation will introduce you to Groovy, a free, open-source dynamic language for the Java runtime. Groovy borrows the best from dynamic languages such as Python, Ruby or Smalltalk and offers it to you in an all-in-one package using a Java-style syntax. Groovy compiles straight to Java bytecode on-the-fly and works out-of-the-box with all existing Java objects and libraries. Groovy offers higher-level functions and iterators (=closures), built-in syntax for lists and maps, markup, regular expressions , ranges, and much much more. The presentation will conclude with a look at Groovy’s web framework called Grails that tries to outdo Ruby on Rails and advertises itself as “See the light – agile, industrial strength, rapid web application development made easy”.

VIJUG Team

What a great meeting! We had access to the well equipped meeting room at VITP, Gerald Bauer came from Vancouver for the day just for VIJUG and we had a total of 12 people enjoying his presentation.
After a bit of diddling with the AV equipment we did a round of introductions and then Gerald started his presentation introducing the Groovy language and its many features and advantages. Although Geralds presentation was quite long and he told us about many things from within the Groovy, Ruby and Facebook development, Gerald managed to keep us all very engaged and interested for 1.5 hours. It all culminated in a quick demo and discussion of Grails based on an article by Scott Davis posted on developerworks.
After the concluding Q&A session, that was just an extension of the various questions we had during the presentation, we raffled off a Sun Microsystems Java T-shirt although Gerald was clearly not a Sun fan. He is however an IntelliJ fan and now proud new owner of a personal license thanks holding a presentation at VIJUG and of course thanks to our sponsor JetBrains. Andre was the lucky winnter of the T-Shirt. The lucky winner of the IntelliJ license we raffled off was Graham.
Regarding the upcoming meetings I can only hint that there will be IntelliJ licenses and an iPod Nano to be won and that thanks to an initial sponsorship agreement with VITP we will be out at the techpark again.
Concluding I can only say that you missed out if you did not make it and that you better come for the February one. It is going to be good!
Rafael had some good things to say about the meeting…
